Adolescent athletes, such as baseball players and gymnasts, with pain and swelling of the elbow should be closely evaluated for potential osteochondral injuries. Simpler cartilage injuries in younger athletes can be resolved with arthroscopic removal of the lesion and time off from sport. In this video, MUSC Health orthopaedic surgeon Josef K. Eichinger, M.D., discusses the case of a 13-year-old baseball player with left elbow pain who was successfully treated with elbow arthroscopy. Dr. Eichinger also discusses other treatment options for larger lesions, including those that cause collapse of the bone.
