Voice and Swallowing Center Treats Pediatric Conditions
The UCSF Voice and Swallowing Center provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation of pediatric voice, swallowing and upper-airway function. Conditions treated include the following:
- Feeding difficulty
- Choking or coughing on foods or liquids, or other aspiration concerns
- Hoarseness or other acute voice changes
- Episodes of throat tightness leading to difficulty breathing
Various state-of-the-art assessment techniques are used to achieve an accurate diagnosis, including flexible laryngoscopy, stroboscopy and flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). These techniques are also used to monitor the child’s post-procedural or therapeutic progress. Children are seen by a pediatric otolaryngologist and a speech-language pathologist who have expertise in these conditions. The center is located at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco. New Clinic for Ingrown Toenail
A new UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals clinic provides care for children afflicted with ingrown toenail. The clinic operates at the Oakland campus. The procedure involves removing the side of the nail that is causing inflammation due to ingrowing. Under the direction of Sunghoon Kim, MD, the multidisciplinary care team offers two analgesia options for this procedure:
- A local digital block in a procedure room at the clinic
- General anesthesia in an operating room

Center Treats Limb Length Discrepancies and Deformities
The UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Center provides comprehensive care for children with limb length discrepancies or deformities and associated conditions of the upper and lower extremities. These may include the following:
- Unequal limb lengths
- Congenital, developmental and acquired limb deformities
- Limb deficiencies including amputations
- Hip disorders
The goal of the center is to help children be as active and functional as possible, using a range of treatment options:
- Advanced reconstruction techniques through multidisciplinary collaboration
- Limb lengthening using state-of-the-art techniques and devices
- Comprehensive treatment with physical therapy and rehabilitation support
Under the direction of Sanjeev Sabharwal, MD, MPH, the center serves patients at the Oakland and San Francisco campuses and at the San Ramon and Walnut Creek satellite clinics.
