Orthopaedic Surgery Provides Increased Access
Now it’s easier for you and your patients to access our team of orthopaedic surgeons in person or virtually.
- Saturday orthopaedic clinics. On two Saturday mornings every month, orthopaedic physicians see patients in person at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland.
- Evening telehealth visits. An orthopaedic surgeon is now available for evening virtual visits with patients whose conditions don’t require an in-person visit. This may include the following needs:
—Reviewing imaging results
—Checking on an incision
—Determining if an in-person visit is necessary
Patients can call (877) UC-CHILD (877-822-4453) to take advantage of these new expanded hours.
Physical Therapy Continues via Telehealth
Kids are seeking alternatives to playing team sports during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as:
- Bicycling
- Dancing
- Running
- Trampolining
These activities can result in injuries needing follow-up care with a physical therapist. Telehealth visits can help.
Though it’s no substitute for in-person, hands-on physical therapy, telehealth provides a means of connecting with patients while they continue to shelter in place. With telehealth, physical therapists can:
- Perform assessments.
- Show patients how to do exercises to build strength after an injury.
- Help kids maintain progress in movement, balance and posture.
- Teach parents how to perform recommended exercises and movements, so they can work with their kids.
- Determine if an in-person visit is needed.
The department assures all families that it is safe to come in for a visit. All safety protocols are strictly enforced for staff and patients, including wearing masks, distancing and handwashing.
To refer a patient for physical therapy, or to schedule a physical therapy telehealth visit, call (877) UC-CHILD (877-822-4453).
