When Hayleigh and Aaron Munoz's 6-week-old daughter Ruby started vomiting and being lethargic, they brought her to the emergency room at their local hospital and she was transported to UC Davis Children's Hospital to be monitored for dehydration. Doctors soon discovered there was something seriously wrong with her heart.

we found on New Year's Eve they were pregnant with Rui, which is exciting. We had some fertility issues with my first. So it was she was a surprise and it was really happy because we didn't think they were gonna be able to have any other kids. Um, pregnancy was harder than my first. I was sick a lot. And umm, but other than that, totally normal. She was born on September 8th. Totally normal. Normal birth, normal weight, normal. Everything they had. They heard a little bit of a heart murmur at the hospital. But I thought that it was just a heart murmur and that they would follow up at her two week appointment E on. When they transferred us, they thought they had hooked up some ivy, wanted her here for observation just cause she was a little bit dehydrated. Within a very short period of time in the I c. U was clear that there was more going on than just dehydration. The main pumping chamber of her heart was really not working very well, but we got her on the particular sport called ECMO very quickly. Um, she had evidence of multi system organ dysfunction early on. Um, and we felt very strongly that if we didn't do something to relieve the pressure on the left ventricle that she would not get better. First of all, they told us surgery was gonna take, like, six hours, and they called us after what, like 2.5 and told us it was done and we were couldn't believe it. And then we got really nervous because we're like, Why is it finished? You know, like, there's something happened, you know? And they said no anything. Everything had gone really well. I couldn't figure out, like how how bringing her in from vomiting and being a little bit lethargic, what steps that there were to get her on life support 12 hours later. I mean, e I still, you know, it was so overwhelming initially, and it was terrifying those first few days because those were some dark days for us, really tested, tested us because we didn't know she's going to get to the next day. And, you know, she didn't even look like a baby. I mean, she was so swollen from all the fluids they had to give her and she took upto just a million machines. When we got in here, there's all these pumps and lines and lines and lines that are hooked up to her, and it just it looks unreal. I mean, it looks like out of a movie, some side, my movie or something. The after the surgery was just amazing. It's just way knew that we still got a long road to go. But that was the first hurdle on her road to recovery. And the doctor is just really believe that She made it through this, that she could get better e to see her acting like a real baby. She's eating like a really big She is making eye contact and laughing. She laughs for the first time, like two nights ago. Been amazing people. I guess it's really I appreciate the fact that the doctors take the time to not only just take care of our childhood, they come in and ask, Do we have any questions? They let it. They encourage us to listen in on grounds they encourage us to ask any questions. We have to explain everything and layman's terms. Just tell us this is what's going on. So it's nothing. We're with them every single step of the way, which is fantastic. And they give us the rationale behind why they're doing something. So the time just we're doing this and then they walk away. They tell us what's going on. They communicate so well with the nurses, the nurses here and say that the nursing staff here I've just been astounding. I don't think we would be this together. It wasn't for them to be honest. And if it wasn't for just everybody here has just been so outstanding way have not have not met a person that I didn't love immediately. They've just They've taken care of us every single step of the way. Could not have asked for a better place. Mhm.
