Enhancing stem cell therapeutics for volumetric muscle loss

Thomas Rando, M.D., Ph.D., chief of neurology and director, Rehabilitation Research and Development, Stanford University, and Carmen M. Terzic, M.D., Ph.D., chair of Mayo Clinic Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, discuss enhancing stem cell therapeutics for volumetric muscle loss. Dr. Rando and his team have been using stem cells to repair tissues of soldiers with war injuries resulting in a loss of a lot of muscle tissue.

At this point, there is nothing that can be done for those patients other than rehabilitation and it doesn't really work to restore function. The goal is to introduce muscle stem cells into tissues to try to rebuild them and regain function. Incremental advances have been made in using stem cells to build tissues. Researchers also want to learn how physical activity can improve nerve regeneration, innervation and the functional curve of the muscle. The goal is functional recovery and moving from an animal model to a human model.
