Conversing with the Brain: Responsive Neurostimulation Helps Prevent Partial Epileptic Seizures

The neurons of the brain communicate with one another through electrical signals. In recent years, therapies for a variety of conditions, ranging from Parkinson’s disease to depression, have been developed that intervene in that communication by sending an electrical charge, either via an implanted microprocessor (deep brain stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation) or through an external magnetic coil (transcranial magnetic stimulation).
