Dr. Friedman summarizes two recent studies from China which suggest that COVID-19 is rarely harmful to newborns when the mother has symptoms. While it is passed transplacentally from mother to infant, it does not appear to cause birth defects. The one caveat Dr. Friedman poses is that if COVID-19 causes serious symptoms in the mother during pregnancy, the pregnancy itself may be at risk. Dr. Friedman outlines precautions the Mount Sinai Health System is taking regarding newborns and visitors. For more information about COVID-19, please visit www.mountsinai.org/covid19.
