As the new Section Chief for Upper GI, HPB and endocrine surgery at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Mashaal Dhir, MD, FACS, is eager to share his mission-driven approach to working with patients and referring physicians alike to fight cancer.
"The mission at Roswell aligns with my personal mission of providing surgical excellence with compassion, multidisciplinary care, with state-of-the-art treatment as well as innovation while keeping the human side of treatments,” he says. “I think experts at Roswell are not only defining how cancer should be treated, but they are laying standards for the rest of the world as well.”
He anticipates a continued focus on precision oncology for hepatobiliary and other GI cancers in addition to “next-gen sequencing so we can look for targeted mutations. More and more, we are looking for those mutations to monitor, to use for early detection.”
Dr. Dhir also has a clear goal for the future of his department at Roswell Park. “My vision for our section of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at Roswell is that we become the leading, number one cancer center in America,” he says. “We’re already working together on bringing multidisciplinary treatment, state-of-the-art treatment, precision oncology, precision surgery and minimally invasive surgery for our patients.”
I am Michal be here. I'm one of the surgical oncologists and endocrine surgeon and a section chief of the Upper GI and hepatobiliar and pancreatic surgery at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. I went to medical school at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. It's the premier medical school in India. I'm a surgical oncologist because I, I love taking care of cancer patients and I love the multidisciplinary collaboration, the innovation. And uh the ever changing treatment options that we are bringing to our patients every day. I want the referring doctors to know that I will work with them and I will get back to them regarding their patients with a timely treatment plan and we'll take care of the patients together with them on the clinical side. I have special expertise in the robotic surgical techniques of the liver, pancreas, stomach, and bile duct, as well as taking care of the complex cancers of the liver, pancreas, bile duct, as well as neuroendocrine tumors and adrenal tumors. With regards to research, I look for clinical questions while taking care of my patients, and then if there are unanswered clinical questions, I look through meta-analysis and systematic review to see how we can answer those questions. I'm involved in health services research to improve the delivery of health care to our patients and to improve access. We are using a lot of precision medicine and. Precision oncology and taking care of cancer patients. The chemotherapy for the cancers, uh, treat is changing and more and more medications are becoming available for all my patients. I do nextgen sequencing so we can look for those targeted mutations as how we can customize the treatment plans for the patients. And more and more we're looking for those mutations to monitor our patients to use for early detection. When we do a complex operation, sometimes patients have to stay off of chemotherapy, and during that time off, sometimes their disease could progress. So when we use small incision surgery, we can get the patients healed from surgery quickly and they can return to their intended oncologic treatment quickly. We are also commonly using hepatic artery infusion chemotherapy at Roswell. Many patients, when they come to us with complex bile duct cancers of the liver and multiple liver tumors from colorectal metastasis, there's not just one treatment which would work for them, and sometimes they're not candidates for surgery, but a liver pump is a specialized pump which delivers. right to the liver without having any systemic side effects. So I think this is a treatment we use a lot for our patients. It's been shown to be effective, prolonged survival with minimal side effects, and we're proud to offer that to our patients at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. My vision for our section of hepaabilia and pancreatic surgery at Roswelle is that we become the leading. Number one cancer center in America. We are already working together to bring the multidisciplinary treatments, state of the art treatments, precision oncology, precision surgery, and minimally invasive surgery for our patients, and I want the patients and referring doctors. To know that their patients will get timely, appropriate, and state of the art care. And uh once you refer the patient to us, patients and their family members can expect a phone call soon, and they can rest assured that our team will be reaching out to them. The mission at Roswell aligns with my personal mission of providing surgical excellence with compassion. Multidisciplinary care with state of the art treatments as well as innovation while keeping the human side of treatments, and I think experts at Roswell are not only defining how cancer should be treated, but they are laying standards for the rest of the world as well. So I think I was naturally attracted to Roswell Park and it's a privilege to work for the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
