Meet Dr. Shashi Murthy, as he discusses his areas of focus, his path to interventional radiology, his approach to patient care, and how the field of interventional radiology is evolving.
Hi, everyone. My name is Doctor Shashi Murthy. I'm an interventional radiologist with the group medical centers, radiologists. The thing I love about IR is how broad of a field it is. I get to be involved in many different disease processes. Currently, I'm building a service line tailored towards chronic knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis and also patients who have recurrent bleeding from hemorrhoids. Uh but I also enjoy and do perform procedures and interventional oncology, hepatobiliary diseases, prostate arty embolization and fibroid embolization. When I was 11 months, I actually fell into a pool and drowned. It was my aunt, a family medicine physician who pulled me out of the pool performed CPR. I was airlifted, spent time in IC U and and had a very good recovery. Uh Since then, my aunt has continued to be a role model in my life. And I knew growing up that I wanted to enter a profession where I also had the ability to help people. I went to undergrad with that goal of mine and went to Eastern Virginia for medical school and did my radiology and IR Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. My approach to patient care, really tailors around how I would want my family member treated by their physician. Uh What's important to me is to have a well established clinic where I get ample time with my patients so that I can meet them, talk to them, find out their priorities, what their issues are and how I can help them adequately. I like to set clear expectations at this time and also make sure that I have their trust in moving forward and performing procedure on them. The other part of patient care that I emphasize is follow up the field of IR is continuously innovative. Uh Right now, the biggest pushes are in MS Kir where we are doing procedures for knee arthritis using artery embolization of the genicular arteries, where we are also doing procedures for frozen shoulder and for even plantar fasciitis.
