Emily Reardon, M.D., discusses her primary clinical interests, path to medicine, approach to patient care, and how the field of Vascular Surgery continues to evolve.
my name is Emily Reardon. Um a vascular surgeon working with Sentara vascular specialists. So as a vascular surgeon that encompasses, you know, all the blood vessels in the body with exception of the brain and the heart. Um I have a particular interest in peripheral vascular disease. So that's patients with arterial calcification or critical limb ischemia um and providing limb salvage options. Um also enjoy carotid disease, so performing traditional carrot, endarterectomy, or trans carotid stenting or T car um and also providing and maintaining dialysis access for the end stage renal disease population. I grew up in a small community um was a student athlete. So uh you know, had an interest in science and and the human body and and interacting with people um and had I think teachers early on that, you know, directed me to healthcare um In college I again was a student athlete and um you know, trial the premed track um and rotated with physicians in the community um and was hooked. I just thought a career in medicine would be a really fulfilling way to have an impact in people's lives. Um Think surgical training was attractive because of my athletic nature. Um And then, you know, vascular was was an acquired taste I think, you know, ultimately was attracted to the variety of diseases, the variety of patients that, you know, I care for. Um and the variety of surgical techniques. So it's it's important to me that my patients feel comfortable um that they can put their trust in me. I'm there to listen and guide them through their disease process uh and surgery or a procedural intervention. I think Sentara provides the best of both worlds for patients in the community. So, you know, that is access to care in the community um with also access to extraordinary resources. Um The Sentara vascular group, central vascular specialists at large um particularly with the affiliation with Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk um has been nationally recognized as leaders in the field um And they've been involved in trials that are advancing vascular surgery. Um and we have access to that in the community um and it keeps us current and able to provide really good quality care. One of the most significant advancements in vascular surgery has been the development of endovascular techniques. Um You know nowadays the large majority of vascular disease is managed with endovascular treatments. Um So what used to be a large incision long hospital stay, long recovery time can now be managed with smaller incisions or per cutaneous access. Um You know, outpatient type surgery or shorter, shorter recovery times. And that is of course less of a stress on, you know, the patient physiologically or mentally. Um And these technologies continue to evolve
