Transradial approach for cardiac catheterization: The new frontier of coronary intervention

Over 1 million cardiac catheterizations and over 500,000 percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) are performed annually in the United States alone, the vast majority through the femoral artery.  The transradial (TR) approach for cardiac catheterization utilizes the superficial artery of the wrist and offers significant advantages over the femoral approach by way of reductions in major bleeding, vascular complications and length of stay, as well as enhanced patient comfort and patient preference, all while maintaining procedural success.  This technique is performed in the very small minority of cases across the U.S. but is one of the standard approaches at the University of Chicago Medicine even in complex cardiac cases.  In this video, Dr. Sandeep Nathan, Director of Interventional Cardiology and Co-Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the University of Chicago demonstrates the technique in a patient undergoing coronary angiography and stent placement.
