Venkat Kalapatapu, MD, examines blunt thoracic aortic injury (BTAI) from the perspective of presentation, management in the outpatient setting, transfer initiatives and in-hospital care. An endovascular surgeon, Dr. Kalapatapu reviews the primary mechanism of BTAI (compression following rapid deceleration from falls or motor vehicle accidents) and discusses issues and trends in the surgical management of these injuries, including imaging, time to treatment, stenting vs. open surgery and unique endovascular challenges, as well as nonoperative management.
