Yale’s Pulmonary Vascular Disease (PVD) Program was established to care for patients with pulmonary hypertension, acute and chronic pulmonary embolism, and unexplained shortness of breath. Led by Inderjit Singh, MBChB, BMedSci, Yale Medicine’s pulmonary specialists collaborate with physicians in cardiology, rheumatology, hepatology, cardiothoracic surgery, diagnostic radiology, and pathology to provide one of the most comprehensive pulmonary hypertension care programs in the Northeast region. The PVD program provides a one-stop shop for diagnostic tests, treatment, and patient education.
Types of Conditions
- Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) caused by heritable or connective tissue diseases, HIV, portal hypertension due to chronic liver disease, congenital heart, schistosomiasis or of unknown cause.
- Left Heart Disease such as left-sided valvular heart disease or left heart failure.
- Chronic Lung Disease and/or Hypoxemia associated with COPD or interstitial lung disease
- Chronic Thromboembolic Disease caused by chronic blood clots in the lungs
- Unclear Multifactorial Mechanisms including polycythemia vera, sarcoidosis, metabolic disorders (such as thyroid disease), or cancer.
Diagnostic Testing
- Pulmonary artery catheterization.
- Electrocardiogram (EKG).
- Imaging tests, such as a ventilation-perfusion, or VQ, scan and CT scan.
- Blood tests
- Submaximal cardiopulmonary exercise test
The PVD program participates in groundbreaking research in pulmonary hypertension with multiple, ongoing studies. We are one of the few centers in the nation that is accredited by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, a comprehensive care center for patients with Pulmonary Hypertension.
